Hokey Night in Canada

Excuse me for finding it more than a little ironic that the very same bunch of extreme right-wing Canada-haters that are constantly whining and gnashing their teeth about the country being little more than “a Northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term” and who want to privatize healthcare, clamp down on immigration, scrap bilingualism, rubbish the Senate, and dismantle national institutions like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation — indeed, tear-down every conceivable legacy of the despised Trudeau era, are now waxing sentimental and blubbering over the fate of our so-called “second anthem” that they maintain is an “irreplaceable” part of our national identity…

Since when did any of these intellectual vandals, wannabe republicans and free-market economic miscreants — who’d be quite happy to see this country achieve “competitive parity” in all respects with Mississippi or West Virginia, it should be added — give a toss about things that are unique symbols of the Canadian cultural experience?
