And the winner is… a man alleged by someone (his mother perhaps?) to be “one of the top five political minds in the country”… Yes folks, it’s Gerry Nicholls!
It seems the former shill for the National Citizens Coalition and useful Tory idiot spent all of about three and a half minutes of his valuable time this morning knocking off a definitive list of what he presumes to be “the top three things Left-wingers fear the most.” Wow! Phone the neighbours and wake the kids… this is really earth-shattering stuff! Capitalism, free trade, and Wal-Mart… who knew? I guess this must be one of the “hard parts” of Gerry’s blog that he referred to the other day in the comments here.
Actually, this post is just a link to a right-wing blog refuting the arguments of David Sirota, a pundit who may be familiar to some from his stints on AAR’s Al Franken Show, his appearances as a commenter on various cable news shows, and his bestselling books Hostile Takeover and The Uprising. While Sirota definitely speaks for a certain populist segment of “the left” — he’s opposed to laissez faire free trade policies, supports fair trade, and is an advocate for workers’ rights and organized labour — his views can hardly be said to fully encompass “the left” in its entirety any more so than the views of Norman Podhoretz can be said to represent those of “the right” in America.
Of course, making that critically important distinction might be just a little too much hard work for Mr. Nicholls. Perhaps rather than expectorating this sort of lazy, vacuous, worthless twaddle, his precious time and effort would be better spent on his more usual pursuit of cultivating those disaffected elements of the Conservative Party that won’t be mollified until government is, as Grover Norquist infamously said, reduced to the size where it can be dragged into the bathroom and drowned in the bathtub.
