In the first of three essays written on a journey to the Galápagos Islands, Richard Dawkins considers one of the extraordinary creatures that helped inspire Darwin’s theory of evolution. This would have been included in his book The Ancestor’s Tale if Dawkins had written it after, instead of before his personal pilgrimage to the islands.
